Morocco erects 4-metre barrier near Ceuta ahead of feared 15 August crossing attempt

Morocco has begun constructing a four-metre-high barrier on the outskirts of Fnideq, a town a few kilometres from the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, TASS reported citing The Maghreb Times.

The barrier targets the Bab Sebta border crossing and is designed to stop illegal migrants from assembling near the frontier. Law enforcement sources in the region told the newspaper the structure is intended to give security officers more reaction time before any migrant flow reaches the border.

Moroccan authorities have also deployed thousands of security officers, auxiliary forces and military units in Fnideq and on the outskirts of Ceuta as part of special security measures in the zone.

The construction follows a mass crossing attempt in July. Anonymous reports circulating on social media have warned of a new attempt planned for 15 August, prompting the accelerated response.
