MSCI Gives Turkey 8-Month Deadline: BIST 100 Falls Over 3% on Friday
Global index provider freezes changes to Turkish equity indices citing market transparency concerns; status downgrade possible if reforms do not materialize by June 2027.

Global index provider MSCI announced it has frozen planned changes to Turkey's equity indices, citing concerns over market transparency and investor confidence as justification. According to Cumhuriyet's report from Reuters, BIST 100 fell more than 3 percent on Friday, the day the decision was announced.
MSCI stated that should Turkey fail to implement sufficient market reforms by June 2027, it could consider downgrading the country's classification from emerging markets status to a lower category — frontier markets or standalone markets.
This step does not immediately change Turkey's current status; however, it could prompt international investment funds tracking the MSCI Emerging Markets Index to review their positions in Turkish assets. BIST 100 has recently experienced a period in which foreign investor participation has remained relatively low; a status downgrade carries the risk of making this situation permanent.
The 8-month reform timeline MSCI has set for Turkey underscores once again that Borsa Istanbul is under international scrutiny.
