Starlink cuts connections above 160 km/h; Musk admits control lies with U.S. military
As Ukraine says the Starlink speed cap disrupted battlefield drone operations, Musk confirmed the military version is under Washington's command.

On Tuesday night, Starlink implemented a speed limit that cuts off devices moving faster than 160 kilometres per hour. The practical implication is clear: every drone flying above that threshold loses network access. Ukrainian officials publicly confirmed that the restriction directly disrupted battlefield operations.
Elon Musk acknowledged in a post on X that the military-grade sister service Starshield is controlled by the U.S. government and that speed and usage limits are set by the U.S. military — ultimately the White House. Musk was responding to President Zelensky, who said: "I hope this is a mistake."
Zelensky's adviser suggested the restriction was no accident and was linked to recent tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Ukraine's former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov noted that connectivity was partially restored as of Wednesday evening.
Starlink occupies a critical infrastructure role for Ukraine, both in guiding drones toward Russian targets and in protecting its own airspace. For Kyiv, which has grown effectively dependent on the U.S. SpaceX service since 2022, Washington's ability to make unilateral decisions could fundamentally alter the dynamics on the front line.
