The High Military Council, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, convened at Beştepe following a visit to Anıtkabir. At the center of the agenda are promotion files for colonels to general and admiral ranks, current generals being elevated to the next rank, and personnel retiring due to staff shortages and age limits.
Notable names at this year's meeting: Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, and Land Forces Commander General Metin Tokel are sitting at the council table for the first time. It was indicated that possible position changes within the command structures will also be evaluated.
The council is the most critical annual meeting that determines the top structure of the Turkish Armed Forces; last year multiple commanders were changed at this meeting. Decisions will be shared with the public following Erdogan's approval.
