Kyrgyzstan will abolish all seven regions and 40 districts as part of the second phase of administrative-territorial reform. Elchibek Zhantayev, director of the State Agency for Civil Service and Local Self-Government, announced this on Kabar radio.
Instead of the existing regional units, over 20 aymaks will be created — administrative formations that will be larger than current districts but smaller than regions. According to Zhantayev, Issyk-Kul Region could be divided into northern and southern aymaks as an example, while in Jalal-Abad and Osh regions, smaller districts are planned to be merged with neighboring territories that have greater development potential.
President Sadyr Japarov previously stated that the first phase of the reform was successful. Over the course of two years of its implementation, the number of rural aymaks in the republic was reduced from 452 to 231.
