AFAD: 4.5-magnitude earthquake recorded in Nurdağı district of Gaziantep at 03:42 a.m.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced that a 4.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Nurdağı district of Gaziantep on August 9, 2026, at 03:42 a.m. The epicenter was in Nurdağı, with the hypocenter depth measured at 7.44 kilometers.

According to AFAD data, initial reports contain no casualties or material damage. Nurdağı was among the districts hardest hit by the February 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake disaster; at that time, much of the district center was reduced to rubble. For the local population, every tremor arriving in the dead of night rekindles that memory. Earthquakes of 4.5 magnitude generally do not cause damage; however, for residents still living in container cities or prefabricated structures in the earthquake zone, the perceived risk is much higher. AFAD issued no warning of aftershocks.
