World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The decision was taken in light of the speed of transmission and the geographic spread of the disease. The WHO said it will step up coordination to contain the outbreak in affected countries.
Ebola is a highly contagious disease with a high mortality rate that can cause severe hemorrhagic illness and organ failure.
