Hantavirus outbreak forces major port operation at Tenerife cruise ship

Spain has launched a major security and health operation at a Tenerife port where a cruise ship carrying confirmed hantavirus cases is docking. Interior Ministry officials deployed 325 Civil Guard officers and 33 police personnel to manage the arrival, according to Spanish reports.

Twenty-three countries are involved in the coordinated response to the outbreak. Spanish authorities emphasized the humanitarian dimensions of the operation, stating that the people aboard are "people, not patients or cases," signaling a focus on dignity during the public health emergency.

Hantavirus is a serious infectious disease transmitted primarily through contact with infected rodent droppings. The virus can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, with fatality rates ranging from 30-40 percent in severe cases. Port authorities have implemented containment protocols to prevent further transmission as the vessel completes its journey.
