Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office announced that it has launched an investigation under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code against the owner or owners of the Instagram account 'CHAKMA @grupchakma' over a video with the content 'we will set an example for young transgender children' published on social media, on charges of 'inciting or demeaning the public to hatred and hostility.' According to information conveyed by Anadolu Agency, the investigation is being conducted on two separate fronts aimed at identifying the account owner and blocking access to the content.
In the prosecutor's statement, it was noted that the video 'contains an attack on society's customs, moral and ethical values and is of a nature that negatively affects the development of children.'
In similar social media investigations in Turkey, the first precedent decision resulting in conviction under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code was heard in Istanbul in 2022. It was learned that a request for access restriction to the account has been transmitted to the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK).
