The conditions imposed by the Competition Authority on the A101 and Carrefoursa merger have been clarified: a total of 48 stores will be divested from regions where competition concerns have been identified; 10 will belong to A101 and 38 to Carrefoursa. The total workforce of both chains will be maintained at current levels for three years.
Following the merger, the two chains will continue operating with separate organizational structures. Among the commitments is Carrefoursa's complete cessation of alcohol sales by year-end across its 1,237 stores in 77 provinces. This reverses Carrefoursa's 2022 expansion into the alcoholic beverages section. Once the merger is completed, the resulting chain will rise to the position of a decisive third force in Turkey's discount and supermarket market, behind BİM and Migros.
The Competition Authority approved the A101-Carrefoursa merger on condition that 48 stores are divested and Carrefoursa ceases alcohol sales by year-end. Once completed, the new company will become Turkey's third-largest retail player after BİM and Migros.
Carrefoursa shoppers may experience changes in pricing and product range; alcohol buyers will have until year-end to gradually switch to other chains. The closure of 48 stores across regions may affect some customers' access to their nearest branches.
